Patoranking has unveiled a shocker with a new revelation about himself.
In a media parley organised by MTV Base, the Reggae act said that he would have been a criminal but for music.
According to him, music saved him from becoming a criminal, “The slum is not a place that gives many options”. Patoranking said. “There, it was either you make it the right way or the crime way but I chose music and it has worked for me”.
He
also expressed his appreciation to MTV Base for making him the Artiste
of the Month and for helping him secure the partnership deal with
international reggae music label, VP Records which he describes as one
of the high points of his musical career,
“As
many of you know, VP Records is one of the biggest record labels in New
York so being signed under that label is a big deal for me which is why I
am grateful to MTV Base”.
Meanwhile, dancehall act Shank, has expressed his happiness with Patoranking's success, stating that "I
feel happy that finally, there is a platform for reggae artistes to be
seen in the same light as any other secular act; so it is a win-win
situation for me"
Patoranking has been the poster boy of the dancehall genre in Nigeria since 2013, thanks to his singles 'Alubarika', 'Girlie O', and 'Girlie O' remix featuring Tiwa Savage.
Shank was the leading star of the dancehall scene with his smash hit in 2008 'Julie'.
The dancehall's act career has been unstable for most parts due to
label issues. But he accepts that Reggae has grown big as a movement,
and that is ultimately good.
"I have had my
moment in the spotlight and when I was on top of my game, there was
nobody around to contend with me. Right now, there are a lot of people
doing dancehall music and it has become a movement. I don’t see it as
if only one person is spearheading the reggae movement. I like the fact
that anybody that sings dancehall music would be listened to now" he said.
